Diagonal Gingham & Sunflower | Nail Art
Monday, May 25, 2015
Hi! Today I have the cutest summer design! Gingham is perfect for spring and summer, it reminds me of picnic blankets!
I'm not going to lie, this design took forever! I hand painted the gingham, which meant I spent a while trying to make the lines perfect. I have seen many tutorials which recommend mixing your polish with water to sheer it out, I just decided to use two shades of the same colour. I have been loving the Barry M Gelly polishes for nail art lately. I used Blueberry and Damson.
For the gingham design, I started with two coats of an off white shade. Once that was completely dry, I took a striper brush dipped into the lighter blue, and created thick stripes diagonally across the nail. I like to make my stripes quite thick, I tend to go for three stripes on each nail. Remember that the thinner the stripes are, the trickier it is to create the gingham effect. After that is dry, paint stripes in the other direction. Now comes the most difficult part, adding the deeper blue squares! I used a thin striper brush for this part. Start by outlining each square where the two lines cross each other. I found it easier to outline the squares, then fill them in with a toothpick. You may struggle with this part if you created thin stripes.
The sunflower was really easy to create! I painted mine over the bare nail. Start by creating a rough circle on one side of your nail, then take a pastel yellow, it's important to have contrasting shades of yellow, if they are too similar your design won't have much depth. My camera didn't pick up the colours I used too well! With the pastel yellow, create smaller petals from the brown circle. I create the petals in a convex shape, small at the bottom, larger in the middle, and smaller again at the tip. Repeat this process until you have petals coming from the whole circle. Then take a deeper yellow, and create larger petals in between the smaller ones. Then fill in the brown circle and dot nude spots in the middle. To add depth, I took the deeper yellow and blended a bit at the bottom of the pastel ones, and added brown lines in each one.
This design is so cute! I love how it turned out. You could switch up the colours of the gingham print, I think red would be perfect for summer. Be sure to let me know if you have any questions, I probably missed something out!
